Skate to Create Class

Skate to Create: June 2016

In this Summer Workshop, students used stencils and spray paint to adorn their own skateboard deck.

Student Work 2013: Skate to Create

Skate10_web In this series of three 1.5 hour workshops, students of all skill levels designed and painted their own skateboard deck using stencil and spray paint techniques.  Instructor Gabriel Pons guided them from initial brainstorming through developing their illustrations into a layered stencil design.  After refining their designs, students chose their color palette, cut their stencils, and spray-painted their own boards.  Below is a selection of photos from 2013's Skate to Create workshops.

You leave this class, Skate to Create, with a one-of-a-kind art deck of your own design and the knowledge to make many more! To create a custom skateboard, bring your ideas and PONSHOP will supply all materials and stenciling/spray painting instruction. PONSHOP Student Work: Skate to Create

Below are pictures of my "Skate to Create" students over the past year (January-October 2011).  The "Skate to Create" class has been really popular over the years.  I mean, when do get a chance to paint a brand new skateboard deck and then ride it?  In a series of three 1.5 hour classes, I take the students through a brief history of skateboarding and skateboard graphics and then help them develop designs that can then be achieved using spray paint and stencils.

Street Art/Skate to Create: December 2010

Wrapping up 2010's art workshop series was a great duo of kids with a lot of heart and plenty of enthusiasm for creative work. Rama and Sam did up some stencil designs on a vinyl record and skateboard deck, respectively. They started with idea sketches and then developed full scale stencil patterns for spray painting. Check the images below. Nice work boys!

It took some time getting used the shape of a 12-inch vinyl record as a canvas, but soon enough, Rama (photographed in motion) had a direction.

Sam did several variations of his animated character before cutting the stencils.

"Meatwad get the money see.." 3-Layer stencil action on vinyl record for America's most wanted...

Sam used a 2-layer stencil and plenty of color to render this cartoon character on his skate deck.

Skate to Create: October 2010

October's "Skate to Create" class started with nothing more than blank boards and the artists' ideas. In three 1.5 -hour sessions, we took it from idea to drawing to stencil and ended up with a personalized deck ready to skate. Check out the pics below:

Selecting the perfect color scheme is always important.

The background for the boards accents the main designs.

Gussie cut stencils using his name and a self-made logo to create a personal reflection of himself in his board.

Jasper was inspired by the bomber art in World War II and succeeds in capturing an intimidating and fierce battle face. (on the deck, not Jasper...)

Daisy took her love for pandas to a new level with this 2-layer stencil.

Skate to Create: September 2010

September's Skate to Create students managed to get their work done ahead of schedule, which earned them some time on the public wall in the backyard. In three 1.5 hour sessions, they designed their deck graphics, cut stencils, and sprayed their boards. Good work gentlemen, below are some pics:

Hunter (above) got a shot at some freehand spray painting while Tyler (below) hit up the wall with markers...

Check out Tyler's "monster" deck (above).

Hunter cut up one intricate stencil and used it twice for a drop shadow effect.

Skate to Create: August 2010

The month of August brought in a new crop of students for "Skate to Create" Within three 1.5-hour sessions, we went from sketch to stencil to spray paint.

The majority of work was at the drawing table, where the students drew full scale
graphics that were then turned into stencils.

Here's the final line up. Nice work boys - now go skate!

Skate to Create/Street Art Workshop: June/July 2010

David (above) and Nico came in for a three-day workshop in Street Art and Skateboard design respectively. Below are the pics of their work. Both came with an abundance of ideas and enthusiasm and they gave each other tips and encouragement along the way. Good work guys!

David brought the funk by doing a spray paint/wheat paste piece.

David mashed LEGO with the Statue of Liberty with Disco and this is the result...

Nico's deck design (below) was inspired by mythology. He used three stencils to achieve his graphic.

Skate to Create: April 2010

Spring ushered in another motivated crop of students for the PONSHOP Skate to Create class. Students Savant and Megan got creative, worked hard, and most of all had fun during this workshop. Below are some pics from April's class. Good work ladies...

After a debriefing on the history of skateboard graphics as well as showing students some examples, students got right to work sketching up their designs.

From sketches, we "translate" their designs into stencils, so that they can articulate (and hopefully repeat) their graphic.

Savant cut up this intricate pattern with a drippy form for her deck.
Megan's skate deck mixed up several layers of tiger stripes for a 3-D effect.

We continue to teach classes to both children and adults in Ceramics, Mixed Media, Skateboard Design, Architecture and more. For a current PONSHOP class schedule , Click Here.

Skate to Create: July 2009

Usually a kid's first skateboard is some water-logged Nash handed down by an older brother - this is not the case here. Chris's first deck features his own signature character as well as my classic "Maiden Mono" lettering for his griptape art. Chris picked up the rules for stencils quickly and proceeded to make a 4-stencil composition ready to ride. Good Work - Now Go Shred!

Skate to Create: June 2009

June, 2009. the summer kicked of well with my "Skate to Create" students bringing all their excitement and enthusiasm towards designing and painting their own skateboards. Below are more pics of their work. Nice job girls! now get riding! (click images to enlarge).

Amanda used two stencils for her lettering treatment.

The students took an opportunity during their final session to practice their stencil painting on their griptape.

Sarah's design was inspired by the beach, air balloons, and of course, a love for cats...

Skate to Create: March 2009

Spring has sprung for the "Skate to Create" workshops at PONSHOP Studio. Every month we offer up all the materials, tools, and know-how for kids (and adults) to make their very own skateboard graphic. My most recent student took some of his notebook sketches and created a skateboard with his signature style.

Practice makes perfect: Finn draws and cuts a test stencil to experiment with his colors before applying them on the deck. (click image to enlarge)

The finished product: His "PTB" lettering took 3 stencils and a background to complete - good job Finn!

Winter Workshops: Skate to Create/Intro to Street Art

Bitter cold, strong winds, and darkness by 5:00 didn't stop my students from kicking out some creative designs this winter. Sure, there are challenges to spray painting outside in cold weather, but that's all part of it - adapt and overcome (and have some fun at it...)
Below are some snapshots from my "Skate to Create" and "Intro to Street Art" winter sessions. These guys worked hard and it shows in the finished product. Congratulations! and hopefully we'll see you again this spring....

Skate to Create: David's first skateboard is self-made. He drew and cut all is stencils and selected and sprayed his favorite colors (above and below). Click images to enlarge.

Intro to Street Art: (below) Brad had a 48"x24" board to attack with paint, spray paint, markers and paint pens. After learning the fundamentals of stencil-making, he went at it 110% - working non-stop until the end of the workshop. Good job Bradley, see you soon.

Josh (below) is a guitar rocker and took that energy to his board by carving up some letters with the fundamental outline and fill. He then made a two piece stencil to adorn the top of the "Kelly". Check his progress below...

Skate to Create: October / November 2008

Below are photos from this Fall's "Skate to Create" workshops. I was fortunate to have some really great kids who were excited about designing their own skateboard graphic. It was interesting to see that the students seemed to lean heavily towards the Halloween theme this time around...(click images to enlarge).

Alec and Jakob are hard at work cutting stencils...The finished decks ready for the street.Ty and Jon incorporated some text into their graphics.

Skate to Create: September 2008

Jedi had one of the most ambitious skateboard designs for a ten year-old. He worked very hard and the results were really impressive. In fact, he continued to improvise and paint up until the end of the class. Nice Work!

The original pencil sketch (above) - kind of reminded me of "Killer Croc" from Spiderman...
Some process photos of the first stencil application (above).

Skate To Create: August 2008

I had a fresh crop of students for the "Skate to Create" Workshop in August. Nick and Jason put in three sessions of hard work and the results were really great. Scroll down to see their process...(click pics to enlarge)

Drawing and cutting takes up about 3/4 of the class time - but it's where all the design happens.Jason (aka J-Dogg) does an "X-Ray self portrait" for his deck graphic.Nick took one of his sketches from home and transposed it into this camouflage-like design.
Congratulations guys on a job well done...
