I wanted to share these pics of a commissioned painting that I completed a couple months back.Titled "Resonator (Out of Chaos Comes Order)" this painting now resides at the Fox Clocks studio at LibertyTown Arts Workshop. Once I hung the painting, the client and I were both excited to see how it meshed in with the rest of the shop.

This summer we offer art workshops for both children and adults interested in painting, collage, skateboard graphics, street art, and art books. Scarlett hosts Birthday Parties that include a clay workshop as well. Our goal is to provide a place where people can be creative and have fun at the same time.

It's been approximately 20 months since Scarlett and I moved into our space at LibertyTown Arts Workshop and we decided to make some minor modifications to our studio to keep things fresh. We've repainted the inside and outside walls as well as took off the interior door and window to make more space for our work. Our tee shirts now have a more prominent display area too. Scarlett suspended the clothes rack from the ceiling to minimize the clutter. Below are some pics. Be sure to visit us this summer...

Summer is officially here and what better way to usher it in than with a new line of shop decks ready to skate. The MONO Lions are actually a second generation of a painting titled "King of Concrete Jungle" (below). A lot of people ask me where the ideas come from for the skateboard deck graphics. Long story short is that the graphics are a result of hours and hours of generative studies including drawing and painting. The deck graphics are an extension of my painting explorations, with subject matter inspired from mythology, architectural monuments, and classic figure drawing.
MONO Lion Decks come in 3 different widths (7.5",7.75", and 8.0") and are $45 with griptape. Decks are available at the PONSHOP Studio (916 Liberty Street, Fredericksburg, VA) and Fred Skates (604 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA). Decks may also be purchased via mail-order, simply email me at shop@ponshopstudio.com.
Portland, Oregon is a really great city. Scarlett described it best as a "Kinder, Cleaner, and Gentler Brooklyn." Below are some photos from our trip. To view more pics from our art show, click here.A special shout out goes to our hosts and The Life Gallery owners, Damon Ayers and Tessie Word. They, of course, showed us a great time in Portland and we had a blast with their friends...

Scarlett, Diego and I just returned from our Portland trip and, while the iron is still hot, I figure I'd drop some more pics of work from the show. Below is the text introducing "New History" on exhibit at The Life Gallery in Portland Oregon until June 30th. Enjoy!
“New History” is a celebration of myth, legend, and artifact. Artists Scarlett Suhy-Pons and Gabriel Pons drew inspiration from their travels around the world to places such as Morocco, Greece, Rome, and Spain. Both artists used historic precedents as a means of initiating their work, yet integrate their own contemporary style to reinterpret the material into new forms.

Scarlett and I are pleased to announce that the MONO Medusa Art Tees are finally finished. As a compliment to the MONO Medusa Skateboards that were released in early April, these shirts feature the original artwork of Gabe Pons and are professionally silk screened on American Apparel T-Shirts. Shirts are currently available at the PONSHOP (916 Liberty Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia) for $16 plus tax. PONSHOP tees and decks are also available at Fredericksburg Skateboards (604 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, Va). For those of you far and away, simply email me at shop@ponshopstudio.com to purchase. Below is the color/size chart of the "Medusa" designs for both Boys and Girls: We've also printed up more of the "Queen" and "Girl" tees. Here are the current color/sizes:
As a way to keep our blog postings new and fresh, I've incorporated a channel on YouTube to display videos featuring PONSHOP activities such as Art, Ceramics, Skateboarding, and if you're lucky some video of our son, Diego, bouncing around. The "Videos" section of our website will likely be updated with more (and different) content to compliment the site too. Basically, YouTube's videos will be more like news clips, while the PONSHOP Video Page will be our feature "films" so to speak.
Below are some of the videos that you can view on our YouTube Channel , enjoy!
This is a virtual flip-through of the latest sketchbook I've been working on. Initiated after we left NY in 2005, "Equilibrium: freshman chemistry problems and how to solve them" got hit up with all of my art artillery: acrylics, collage, spray paint, etc. I'll continue to work in this book until all 570 pages are filled.
Shot in April of 2006 and left unedited until March 2007, These clips are of Mark Eyestone of Fred Skates and me skating Brooks Park in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
I finally finished up a new deck design for the Spring/Summer PONSHOP shop deck series. After countless smaller studies on wood block and canvas, I followed through and executed the MONO (pronounced moe-no) Medusa graphic on a skateboard deck. Decks are available at the PONSHOP Studio (916 Liberty Street, Fredericksburg, VA) of course, as well as Fredericksburg Skateboards (604 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA).
All decks are made with North American Hard Rock Maple and come in three widths: 7.5" , 7.75", and 8.0" All artwork is done by Gabriel Pons of the PONSHOP Price: $45 w/griptape If interested in purchasing, contact me at shop@ponshopstudio.com.These decks are made to skate, so for all you rippers out there that want some good wood and original artwork under your feet, stop by check 'em out! -G
Gabe Pons and Rob Landeck followed up their Hyperion Art Show by pitching in for the "Party For Charity" event that took place on Friday, March 30th at the Third Floor Studio (810 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA). Gabe and Rob painted two large canvas murals while bands Boy/Girl, The Gay Blades, and The Transmitters kept people rocking. Organized by Eric Bruner Yang of Pash, this party brought out alot of the young and creative party goers for a good cause. The evening included a collective art show, live music, live painting, and a showing of the recently released Fred Skates/Magic Bullet video "City By The Battlefield." At the end of the night, the canvases were raffled off and much money was raised to benefit the Thurman Brisben Homeless Shelter. More more info on the Party For Charity, click here.

We are pleased to announce that as Scarlett's Website reaches into its third year, it has been updated and re-designed to keep up with her progressive ceramic work. New pieces at scarlettwares.com include the Wind Bowl Series, Igloo Bud Vases, and her latest achievement-Ceramic Hanging Birdhouses. Scarlett also modified her site to include more information about the ceramic classes that she offers as well as birthday parties that she's been throwing at LibertyTown Arts Workshop. We're excited to announce that the Fred Skates/Magic Bullet DVD "City By The Battlefield" will make its premiere this month. PONSHOP pitched in by helping create some of the titles and name treatment for this new skateboard video. Below is a schedule of the DVD premieres as well as a brief press release from the Fred Skates/Magic Bullet website: March 23, 2007: Norfolk, VA @ Relative Theory 271 Granby Street Suite 200, Norfolk, VA 23510 7:00 PM $5.00 March 24, 2007: Fredericksburg, VA @ Central Rappahannock Regional Library 1201 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401 7:00 PM FREE * Short films by Robbie Gregson and Zeph Mann April 1, 2007: Washington, DC @ Warehouse Next Door 1021 7th Street NW, Washington D.C. 20001 7:00 PM
As the second in an ongoing series of collaborative DVD's documenting the skateboarders of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Magic Bullet and Fredericksburg Skateboards are proud to present "City By The Battlefield." Filmed over the course of late 2005 and 2006, this installment tracks many of the dynamic characters that make up a small town's skateboarding presence and features a healthy dose of progressive ideas from everyday skaters.
Set to a soundtrack courtesy of Magic Bullet Records & friends (This Will Destroy You, The All-American Rejects, Sparrows Swarm And Sing, Paul Michel, Mosh Patrol, New Idea Society, Forensics, Nitro Tokyo, etc.), "City By The Battlefield" is concrete evidence that while other sports evolve slowly over time and past glory upholds, skateboarding is reinvented daily.

"Lady and The Tiger", acrylic and collage on canvas 30"x30"x2""The Lady and The Tiger" Detail
I've recently completed a painting titled "The Lady and The Tiger". This piece was a commission for two of our best friends living in Charlottesville, Virginia.
"The Lady and The Tiger" (Detail)"The Lady and The Tiger" (Detail)
Below are some images of the generative studies for the final painting as well as a 12"x12" canvas study I did of the tiger.
The first pencil sketch: September 2006
"Tiger Study (Mini)" was a real breakthrough for me in terms how I typically work. While completing the background for "The Lady and The Tiger" I worked on full-size sketches of the figures. I took one of the pencil sketches of the tiger and pasted it onto the 12"x12" canvas. Something about seperating the sketch from the main painting allowed me to paint with more freedom. I was able to experiment on the mini and then take it to the larger painting. "Tiger Study (Mini)" now resides in the home of a family friend.
Tiger Study "Mini", acrylic and collage on canvas 12"x12" x2" (sold)Tiger Study "Mini", Oblique Detail
For those interested in the content of the paintings, they were inspired by the short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" by Frank R. Stockton. Although instead of an allegory focused on our human nature and the decisions we face, I chose to show both the princess and the beast simultaneously. I was interested in portraying a pensive and statuesque figure with the tiger in the background acting as both companion and guardian.
